Why Everyone Loves the Great British Baking Show
by Rachel Basinger
I tend to be a little more conservative and traditional, so I thought I was the only 20-something who liked the Great British Baking Show. It seems like a show that you’d watch with your grandma who can whip up anything in the kitchen. As I’ve discovered, though, the Great British Baking Show seems to be a favorite of a variety of women, no matter where you live in the country or what your political or religious beliefs are. I’ve come up with several reasons why we just can’t get enough of the Great British Baking Show on Netflix!
C’mon, ladies. Who doesn’t like a good competition? Whether you like to watch American football like I do or maybe the Olympics is more up your alley, we like watching competitions because it shows the extent to which humans can accomplish. I know that I’m always completely floored by athletic skills when I watch Michael Phelps in the Olympics and the baking skills when I watch the Great British Baking Show. Because it’s a competition, everything moves fast, and you see people rise (and sometimes fall) to the occasion.
2. Regular People
While it’s clear that everyone who gets invited to the Great British Baking Show has some expertise in the kitchen, they are all amateurs. That makes me feel like I could do it! Of course, I always love seeing Paul Hollywood, Mary Berry, and Prue Leith show the steps for their desserts, but I always think, “Well, of course they can do that. They’re professional bakers.” But when I see moms and grandmas and plumbers and marketers baking, it is captivating. Here are regular people just like me doing amazing baking.
3. Inspirational Baking
If you’ve watched the Great British Baking Show for any duration of time, you’ve probably started to get ideas of all the baking you could be doing! I know I always want to jump into the kitchen and start making a Victoria Sponge or a tropical pavlova. I especially love the way they sketch what a contestant’s cake, sponge, or trifle is supposed to look like before we get to see the final product. It’s so quaint. While I have never made something quite as complicated as you’d see on the Great British Baking Show, it has inspired me to step outside my comfort zone and make new desserts that I can wow my friends and family with.
4. Unique Desserts
Did I mention that most of the desserts on the Great British Baking Show I have never heard of before? The technical challenge often tends to be a word I have never heard before in my life. And then you have some delightful Englishman or Englishwoman on the show say, “I’ve never heard of it before” in their charming accent. Me too, sister (or brother)! I think why I like the novelty of desserts is that I love to learn about new things, as it expands my horizon. Thanks to the Great British Baking Show, I learned that doughnuts were popularized by four Salvation Army volunteers during World War I, a fact that I got to include in my book about women in the World Wars. I always learn something new when I watch the Great British Baking Show.
5. They’re British!
Okay, ladies, who doesn’t love a British accent? And for a good hour, you get to hear just about every type of variety of a British accent, and it’s so delightful. Of course, the judges are great, and the pastoral scenes in between the baking is so calming. It just makes you want to get on a plane and head over to the sunny and beautiful countryside of the United Kingdom. I know I do, anyway!
Why do you love the Great British Baking Show? Are you inspired by the incredible desserts, do you appreciate that it’s regular people, or do you swoon every time you hear a British accent? No matter what’s the reason, we can all agree that the Great British Baking Show is one of the best TV shows on Netflix. I mean, we all have Netflix basically just for that (and maybe The Crown), am I right?
