Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

These days, we are all so consumed with the hustle and bustle of life, being boss babes, CEOs and Mom-preneurs that often, we neglect ourselves. Sometimes, we get swallowed up by the enormity of our goals that we lose sight of what’s really important. How are we supposed to slay the day if we don’t practice good self-care? But, what exactly is self-care and how do we do it?

Self-care isn’t just about mani/pedis or massages and don’t get me wrong, I live for a good massage but it’s so much more to it than that. Self-care is about doing things and participating in activities that are good for your overall wellbeing. It means taking care of your physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual self.  For women, sometimes it can be hard to find the time to take care of ourselves because we are so busy taking care of everything else! And for some, it’s hard to love on ourselves without feeling a little selfish for doing so, but self-care isn’t selfish! You should never feel guilty about doing what’s best for your mind, body and spirit. And whether you’re a student, a mom or a 6-figure chick, we all have to engage in taking better care of ourselves. Here are a few ways to get started.

  1. Eat Healthy Food

    Consuming healthy food and incorporating fruits and vegetables in your diet is good for your overall wellness. Even if you do it gradually, the better you eat, the better you will feel. Try having a salad for lunch instead of fast food or meal prepping your lunches for the week to avoid having to buy something quick and easy. Remember, you are what you eat!

  2. Drink More Water

    Your body does its best when you’re properly hydrated. Drinking water helps to flush out toxins, improve your complexion, maintain regularity and even boosts your immune system. If you suffer from aches, pains or headaches, it maybe because you are dehydrated.

  3. Get Proper Sleep

    Sleep can sometimes seem elusive, especially when we have so much to do and never enough time to do it all. It’s important to try to unplug and unwind. If you have trouble falling asleep try to decrease the amount of caffeine your drink every day or limit screen time on phones and TV’s before bed. Sleep is when your body gets to rest, relax and recover, so it’s imperative that you get enough of it.

  4. Get Active

    If you’re like me, you don’t really enjoy “exercising,” but staying physically fit is good not only for our bodies but our minds. Believe it or not, it can actually help with your overall energy level. Start slow, like walking on a break or sign up for a beginner’s yoga class. You will feel the difference once you get started.

And last but not least, do what feels good. Do things that fuel and feel good to your soul. The things that make you happy and bring you joy, whatever that is for you, do more of that. Whatever your favorite hobby might be, writing, painting, photography, shopping or doing makeup tutorials, find the time to do more of the things that make you smile. Indulge in regular self-care and treat yourself like the queen you are!
